Just in time vs DONE

..

Or pipeline versus science.

Theory of Constraints dictates that we should:

  1. maximize throughput,
  2. minimizing inventory
  3. … and minimize operational expense.

Science dictates that we should obtain knowledge in our bones, and make it our own.

The two lenses conflict. In the factory mindset, inventory is bad, and should be minimized. In the scientific mindset, knowledge is the goal, and (inventoried) bad explanations is the intermediate step before knowledge.

make a mess, then clean it up. We can let the two lenses coexist by aiming for the factory to grow over time. The factory produces goods, but we must simultaneously support the growth of knowledge. When the bad explanations solidify into knowledge, we jump from the just in time minimize inventory mindset to considering the problem solved. The knowledge is no longer inventory. It is part of our foundation.
